Short answer: A Character is a private, reusable identity for an original fictional person, pet, or creature. Create one with the AI character generator, save it, then select it in Create to keep the same identity across new images and scenes.
Create a Character
Open the AI character generator, or choose it under Tools in the Create picker.
Describe the fictional character. You can also attach clear images that all show the same fictional character, pet, or original non-human subject, or select create from image to draft a text description from one image.
Select Create and wait for both images: a Profile headshot and a Combined character reference sheet.
Select Save as Character, confirm that the identity does not represent a real person, review the identity description, and save.
Manage saved Characters in Library > Characters. Characters are private generation assets, not public profiles.
What a Character contains
Profile headshot: an editorial headshot used as the Character card and selector thumbnail.
Combined character reference sheet: eight views on one sheet: four close face angles, three standing body views (front, side, and back), and one closer torso view. The sheet uses neutral expressions, but that does not limit expressions in later generations.
Identity description: fixed visual traits only. Clothing, pose, setting, nationality, ethnicity, health, and other sensitive inferred traits are left out.
The two images are generated separately and each is charged at the selected model's normal per-image price. They appear only after both finish; if the sheet fails, the headshot is not shown by itself. A Character keeps the two images from its original run, and later results cannot be added to it.
The sheet uses a neutral studio look and simple athletic wear by default so proportions stay visible. To use different clothing or coverage on the sheet, say so in your description.
Models, uploads, and limits
The AI character generator creates images only. It defaults to GPT Image 2 at 2K, and you can choose up to 4K where the model allows it.
Supported models: GPT Image 2, GPT Image 2.5 Flare, GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst, Grok Imagine Image 2.0, Grok Imagine Image Quality, Grok Imagine Image, Nano Banana 2, and Nano Banana Pro.
You can attach up to five source images with the GPT Image models and Nano Banana Pro, four with Nano Banana 2, and three with the Grok Imagine image models.
Every attached image must show the same fictional subject. A generated set that represents a real person cannot be saved as a Character.
Create from image only drafts a description. It does not attach that image to the generation.
Free accounts can save one Character. Active paid accounts can save 25. After a downgrade, existing Characters remain usable, but you cannot create another while you are above the free limit.
Use a Character in Create
Open Create, keep the output set to Image, and select your saved Character.
Describe the new scene, outfit, or action.
Optionally add a scene image with the normal Image control, then select Create.
Media generated with a Character shows the Character's thumbnail in its details instead of exposing the private reference images.
Swimwear, lingerie, and adult glamour requests require a Character whose Age class is set to Adult. Normal safety review and sensitive-content behavior still apply.
You can link a Character to a Profile. The linked Character is then preselected in Create for that profile. The private identity description and reference images are never published.
Guided AI tools do not support saved Characters. Choosing a tool removes the selected Character and shows a notice. See Use Typeshutter AI Tools.
Put your Character into a scene image
Add a photo with the normal Image control and Typeshutter keeps its outfit, pose, framing, lighting, and background while replacing the person with your Character. Typeshutter first prepares a private scene guide that hides the original person's face, so the identity comes only from your Character. Create from image is different: it only writes a prompt and does not attach the photo.
One scene image: one person is replaced. Other people stay as companions, and a face that is hidden, turned away, or out of frame stays that way.
Two to four separate scene images: upload them in the order you want the results. Enter one shared instruction, such as "Replace the person with my Character." You get one image per uploaded scene, each charged at the normal per-image price. This works for image output only.
One 2x2 grid image: upload one image with exactly four photo panels and ask explicitly for four separate images, for example "Create four separate outputs, one from each panel." Typeshutter returns four standalone images in reading order (top-left, top-right, bottom-left, bottom-right) and charges for four images. Other layouts are treated as a single scene.
Use the hairstyle from the scene: say so clearly, for example "Use the hairstyle from the picture." The visible hair color, cut, length, texture, parting, bangs, tied or pinned arrangement, and hair accessories are transferred. The face and identity still come from your Character. Without that request, your Character keeps its own hairstyle.
Remove text or logos: ask explicitly to remove visible text, logos, captions, labels, signs, or watermarks from the scene.
Edit prompt keeps the original scene image, so you can change the instruction and create again. Removing the reference preview removes the scene guide too.
Troubleshooting
The result looks like the person in the scene image, not my Character: create again or switch to GPT Image 2. If it keeps happening, contact Support with the media link and the model you selected.
The result kept my Character's hairstyle: state in the prompt that the hairstyle from the uploaded picture should be used.
A grid upload returned one image: rearrange the source into a clear 2x2 grid and ask for four separate outputs, one from each panel.
Results are in the wrong order: results follow the upload order. Contact Support with the media link if they do not.
Retry is unavailable on an older Character scene generation: open Edit prompt, upload the original scene image again, and resubmit.
"You have reached your Character limit": free accounts can save one Character and active paid accounts can save 25.
"This request requires a Character marked Adult": open Edit Character and set Age class to Adult if the Character is an adult.
Save as Character is missing: the image already belongs to a saved Character, so it shows the Character name and Edit Character instead.
