Short answer: Reference images help supported models follow an existing subject, composition, or visual direction.
Steps
Open the image creation flow.
Choose a model that supports image references.
Upload one or more clear reference images with the Image control.
Write a prompt explaining how the reference should guide the output.
Start the generation and compare the result to your reference.
Notes
Use high-quality references with the subject clearly visible.
For best results, describe what to preserve and what to change.
Typeshutter sends the complete reference photo for image generation, even when you choose a different output shape. A vertical full-body portrait stays available head to toe for a landscape result, and the AI composes the wider surroundings instead of starting from a center crop. Ask for a tighter crop only when you want one.
Each model has its own reference limit, from three to 14 images. See Fix Upload or Reference Image Problems for the limit of each model.
JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, TIFF, HEIC, HEIF, TGA, and PBM images are accepted. When the selected model cannot take the original file type, Typeshutter prepares a compatible version for you. PNG and JPEG are the safest options.

Troubleshooting
If an upload fails, try PNG or JPEG and keep each file at 20 MB or less.
If the output copies too much from the reference, ask for a new style or composition.
If a person is framed too tightly, add a phrase such as "keep the complete person visible from head to toe."
